Following their 4-0 sweep of the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as legitimate championship contenders. They’re set to face the defending champion Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Semifinals in what will be a major test to see what level they’re truly at. A big reason for the Timberwolves rise this season is the continued elevation of Anthony Edwards especially during the NBA Playoffs.

During a recent episode of Shaquille O’Neal’s podcast, ‘The Big Podcast with Shaq,’ former NBA player turned analyst JJ Redick mentioned that he can envision Anthony Edwards staking claim as the new face of the NBA amid a strong NBA Playoffs run.

“Ant to me is like, when we talk about the next face of the NBA, he could be that guy,” Redick said. Redick also mentioned how he can see Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jayson Tatum laying claim to the next face of the NBA mantle as well. Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder also swept their first round playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans and are the No. 1 seed in the West while Tatum and the Celtics dispatched the Miami Heat in five games and have been a top favorite for the title.

Anthony Edwards’ playoff rise has the Timberwolves as a top title contender

The Denver Nuggets first round playoff victory against the Los Angeles Lakers left many feeling like the defending champs are showing signs of weakness. That belief will surely be tested against the Timberwolves. While the Thunder are not to be counted out, this series could determine who ultimately represents the West in the NBA Finals.

Anthony Edwards has been dazzling fans, media and fellow players alike during this playoff run with quite a few people comparing him to a young Michael Jordan. This is Edwards’ first time in the semifinals as the Wolves have lost both first round playoff series that he’s been a part of.

The No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Edwards has arguably become the top shooting guard in the league. If he is indeed the next Michael Jordan, he could fulfill JJ Redick’s prediction of becoming the face of the NBA.

This past season, Edwards averaged a career-high 25.9 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 46.1 percent shooting from the field, 35.7 percent shooting from the three point line and 83.6 percent shooting from the free throw line.

Through the Wolves first four playoff games, Edwards has elevated his game to the tune of 31.0 points per game, 8.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.0 steals with splits of 51.2 percent shooting from the field, 43.8 percent shooting from the three point line and 83.9 percent shooting from the free throw line.

In addition to Edwards, the Wolves have a supporting star in Karl-Anthony Towns, the defense and size with Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels, the vet leadership and playmaking/ball-handling in Mike Conley Jr. and the bench depth with Naz Reid, Kyle Anderson, Monte Morris and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. They have all the ingredients for a championship caliber team.
