Wolves 'remain in discussions' with NBA trade deadline approaching
USA TODAY Sports

There are 18 players on the Timberwolves' roster and they'll need to trim that to 15 before they take the court Friday night in Memphis. Minnesota will surely send two players (maybe Josh Minott and Wendell Moore) to the G League, but if they don't trade at least one more player they'll need to cut someone.

"Right now they have more players than they have roster spots available. They are either going to have to waive a player or they are going to have to find another trade to balance out their roster before the deadline," Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic said Thursday morning on KFAN radio in the Twin Cities.

"I do know that the Wolves remain in discussions with several teams about some potential deals. I don't know that anything is ultra close right now but they definitely have a roster situation that they have to address."

Krawcyznski said that it's Minnesota's "preference" to make another deal before the deadline for a player that they like, though he didn't name who could be on the way out and who Wolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly might be targeting.

Previously, reports have linked Connelly to the guard he drafted in 2021 in Denver: Bones Hyland. Other reports suggested the Wolves were interested in Toronto guard Fred VanVleet, though that seems unlikely now that Mike Conley was acquired in the D'Angelo Russell blockbuster trade.

The NBA trade deadline strikes at 2 p.m. CT Thursday.
