Jets make perfect sequence of moves for their roster-building timeline

In the end, the Jets have selected Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu with the 11th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

And yes, that's correct. It was the 11th overall pick, not their original 10th. First, the Jets made a smart move trading down from 10 to 11 with the Minnesota Vikings, that drafted quarterback JJ McCarthy. The Jets received picks 129 (fourth) and 157 (fifth), while also giving up pick 203 (sixth).

The deal allowed general manager Joe Douglas to add significant draft capital, and they had no risk of losing their preferred player.

Now, the question is what role the rookie will have. Right now, the starting offensive line is projected to have Tyron Smith at left tackle and Morgan Moses at right tackle. The first-round pick might have to sit in 2024, or he can be a left guard — at this point, the projected starter is John Simpson.

Stunt Recognition: Excellent job of picking up movement and course correcting vs loopers

Anchor: Sufficent strength and technique to hold up against bull rushes and protect pocket width

Areas of Improvement-Concerns

Reach Blocks: Tends to miss and lose across his face or have trouble reaching his landmark

Sustaining: Doesn’t possess elite steer or the grip strength to become latched once engaged

Balance: On the ground far too often. Tends to be the result of missed blocks or penetrating defenders winning on blow by’s.

Evaluation:

Fashanu projects as a first round tackle and top 10-15 pick thanks to his tangible traits that include tremendous length and athleticism. He has some technique issues, but given his age and relative experience, the right coaching staff can mold him into being the Pro Bowl talent that his potential suggests.

Decision

Joe Douglas, a former offensive lineman himself, went with the insurance policy considering the age and injury history of his current offensive line.  The Jets have seen how bad things can get without a functioning o-line and Joe would rather let his quarterback remain upright then give him someone else to try and throw to while running for his life.

In the end, it won't be considered a sexy pick, but this is the safe pick that can carry the Jets to the playoffs.  Look for them to look to add a pass catcher in the coming rounds.
